Breaking: PRORP Restored $20 million for FY26

PRORP has been Awarded $20 million for FY26

IAOS is pleased to see that the Department of Defense has appropriated $20 million for fiscal year 2026 toward the Peer Reviewed Orthopaedic Research Program. This program, which funds important MSK research had been cut to $0 last year. It became a major advocacy priority for AAOS, OREF, and state orthopedic societies. Last September, along with our colleagues from other states, the IAOS delegation met with Illinois lawmakers in Washington D.C. The PRORP was one of the primary advocacy issues addressed. We are pleased to see that Congress recognizes the value in MSK research and has reinstated funding for the program. IAOS will continue to push for issues that support the welfare of our patients.

Sincerely,
Jeffrey Goldstein, M.D.
President
Illinois Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, IAOS

ACTION ALERT

Tell your Senator: Protect Orthopaedic Research

As a result of recent cuts to the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP), the Department of Defense's Peer Reviewed Orthopaedic Research Program (PRORP) has been completely defunded for FY2025. However, there's still time for the Senate to fully restore funding as it crafts its appropriations bill over the next few weeks. PRORP is essential in bringing life-changing research to service members and civilians alike.

Musculoskeletal injuries are the leading cause of non-deployability and medical discharge in the U.S. military. The breakthrough advancements from PRORP in pain management and rehabilitation not only benefit service members but are also often utilized to help veterans and civilians.

Stand up for patients today by asking your Senator to support the Peer Reviewed Orthopaedic Research Program.
